The WordPress Developer position is part of the IRIS Center, a federally funded project located within the Department of Special Education at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for the programming of the IRIS Websites (primary and sub-sites), including the programming for individual online resources. This position reports directly to the principal investigator/program manager.

The WordPress Developer will work with the current Webmaster and programmer to handle the programming needs associated with the IRIS Center Website and other center-related sub-sites, including but not limited to development, maintenance, and upgrades to reflect current and best practices in functionality and security; development of interactive resources; posting of static resources; work on the School & District Platform subsite.

Located within the Department of Special Education and supported by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), the IRIS Center develops and disseminates free, engaging online resources about evidence-based instructional and behavioral practices to support the education of all students, particularly struggling learners and those with disabilities. These resources, designed to bridge the research-to-practice gap, are intended for use in college teacher preparation programs, in professional development (PD) activities for practicing professionals, and by independent learners. The array of IRIS resources includes modules, case studies, information briefs, course/PD activities, a high-leverage practices alignment tool, and an online glossary of disability-related terms, as well as supporting products to enhance their use in coursework and PD activities. All of these resources are hosted for free on the center’s barrier-free Website.

Duties and Responsibilities IRIS Website Maintain a WordPress environment, including the WordPress database, plugins, and the IRIS custom template Edit WordPress pages using HTML5 and CSS Write or modify the programming code to meet business requirements Maintain integrity of internal and external links Continually test the website and identify any technical issues Implement and maintain high-quality SEO policies Create/modify user experience and user interface (UX/UI) Brainstorm and secure new web domains Continually review/maintain site’s WCAG 2.1 compliance Manage set-up and maintenance of [schools/districts in] dedicated platform (WordPress) Provide phone/email technical assistance for users of district platform Collaborate with external web consultants on design and function of site Download and prepare log data Download and distribute website user form submissions (feedback, newsletter signups) Create, install, and troubleshoot PHP and JavaScript code Update and maintain currency of programming skills

Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in computer science OR 5+ years similar experience is strongly preferred Required Experience and Skills with Macintosh OS HTML/CSS (including responsiveness) PHP (need extensive knowledge of WordPress and be able to add custom PHP code) MySQL JavaScript, jQuery, Backbone.js SCSS/LESS Git Demonstrate proficiency with CMS, and LMS, preferably WordPress, that includes Working with the IRIS custom post types and the attached custom field types Importing Excel data into IRIS custom post types Understanding, maintaining and updating WordPress plugins Work with Advanced Custom Field items Audio editing Video format conversion Excellent organizational and communication skills Ability to adapt communication appropriately for purpose and audience (e.g., the ability to discuss programming details with non-programmers) High level of accuracy and attention to detail Ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks with accuracy and respond to changing priorities Ability to work as part of the team, lead when appropriate, and accept feedback Professional appearance and demeanor Willingness and ability to perform tasks related to the overall work of the center as needed
